AGING IN DETROIT
Based in Southwest Detroit, Bridging Communities Inc. is a grassroots collaborative involving local unions, businesses, residents, social service and faith-based organizations working together to create caring communities where people of all ages can live in dignity in Southwest Detroit. Our work improves the quality of life for the elders of Southwest Detroit by meeting their needs and the needs of the surrounding neighborhoods, through creative collaboration and innovative programming.
Eighty-four years old and blind, Ms. Susan McClellan lived on her own. After a fire burned down her neighbor’s house, Ms. McClellan’s furnace did not function properly when the gas company had reset her service as a safety precaution. She spent an entire winter without heat. What’s more, the pests who were living in her house had smothered her refrigerator’s motor in search of warmth.
Ms. McClellan’s daughter alerted Bridging Communities, Inc. and they acted swiftly, launching a fundraiser to secure a new furnace and refrigerator. Today, she lives in a safe, healthy environment and gets daily phone calls from friendly BCI volunteers.
